You’re halfway to work, or already at the airport check-in, and a small voice asks whether the garage door actually went down. Turning the car around is a nuisance. On an eligible Merlin installation, myQ can help you check the door’s status from your phone. Remote functions depend on a compatible setup, the required Safety IR Beams and the current myQ connectivity requirements.
This post is about the everyday habit of checking, and how to set things up so the alerts help rather than add noise. It isn’t about fixing connection faults, and it won’t tell you why a door is misbehaving.
What the app can tell you about your door
Our Merlin myQ Connectivity Bundle page describes the basics. With the bundle and a compatible Merlin opener, you can check from your smartphone whether the garage door is open or closed, and operate it remotely. The phone and home system both need the connections required by the selected product. A loss of power, internet or communication can prevent an up-to-date status or remote operation.
That status check is the main event. Instead of wondering, you open the app and look. If the door shows as closed, you carry on with your day. If it shows as open, you’ve learned something while you can still decide what to do about it.
The app can also send notifications to your phone when the door is opened or closed. Rather than you going looking, the app tells you when the door moves, which catches the times you didn’t think to check at all.
We haven’t described anything beyond that here. If you’re hoping for a particular kind of record, such as a list of past openings and closings, check inside the app or ask us before you count on it.
Setting up alerts that you’ll actually read
An alert only works if someone notices it. A few practical choices help.
- Decide who gets the alerts. In a busy house it may suit one or two adults to receive door notifications rather than everyone, so each one gets a proper look.
- Think about when an alert matters. An opening at 3am, or while the whole family is away, deserves a second look. An opening at 8.15am on a school day probably doesn’t.
- Keep the app current by updating it through your phone’s official app store.
- Treat access like a house key. Never share your login or verification codes with a caller.
It also helps to agree on who rings home if an unexpected alert comes through.
Found the door open? Pause before you close it
Here’s the part people skip. Being able to close the door from a distance doesn’t mean every moment suits a remote close.
Before you tap the button, think about who might be at home. A teenager could be getting bikes out. A tradie could be working near the opening. The dog could be lying in its favourite sunny spot by the door. If anyone might be in or near the garage, ring them first and ask them to deal with it in person, or to stand well clear before you close it.
Your opener’s manual is the place to learn how your particular model handles remote operation and which safety equipment is fitted. If you’re not sure what your system has, the model label on the opener is the starting point, and we can help you read it.
If the door shows as open and you can’t account for why, closing it may not be the whole answer. Note the time and follow it up when you’re home.
Checking whether your set-up can do this
myQ isn’t automatically part of every garage door. Start with the exact motor model, the door type and the proposed myQ equipment. Check the current Merlin compatibility information and the supplied manual, or ask us. A product being current does not make it compatible with every installation.
The bundle connects through a gateway to your home internet. If the power or the internet is down, the status you see in the app may not match what’s happening at home. That’s a good reason to treat the app as a handy check, not your only line of security.
Merlin’s M828AU myQ Gateway information excludes tilt garage doors. Its homeowner support guidance also says Safety IR Beams are required for full myQ smartphone functionality. Confirm these requirements before purchasing equipment or relying on any remote function.
For homes in Ringwood, Doncaster and across the eastern suburbs, a useful first question is: can my current opener do this? Sometimes the answer is yes with the right bundle. Sometimes the opener is due for an upgrade, and our garage door openers page shows the current Merlin range. Either way, your opener model, your door type and a photo of the opener’s label give us enough to start.
The value here is the habit more than the technology. Glance at the app when you leave, read the alerts that come through, and pause before closing the door remotely if anyone could be home.
If you’d like to know whether your opener can be set up with myQ, get in touch with the Eastern Garage Doors team. Have your opener model handy and we’ll take it from there.
